What is a UUID?

A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier), sometimes called a GUID, is a 128-bit number used to identify information in computer systems. Its main advantage is that it is practically impossible for two generated UUIDs to be the same, even when they are generated on different computers.

UUID versions

There are several versions of UUID. This tool generates UUID v4, which is entirely based on random numbers. It is the most widely used version in modern software because it requires no central coordination.

Common uses of UUIDs

  • Primary keys in databases that are globally unique.
  • Identifying resources in APIs and microservices.
  • Generating unique file names that never collide.
  • Tracking sessions, orders or transactions.
  • Unique identifiers in distributed systems.

UUID or GUID?

UUID and GUID are in practice the same concept. GUID is the term used by Microsoft, while UUID is the international RFC 4122 standard. Both generate 128-bit identifiers that are practically impossible to repeat.

Why are UUIDs so useful?

Because they are based on random numbers, you do not need to consult a central server to generate an identifier: any system can create them in parallel without risk of collision. That makes them ideal for distributed applications, synchronization and microservices.
