Calculate the final price and savings of any discount instantly. Sales, promotions and percentage discounts.

How to calculate a discount

Calculating a discount is very common when shopping: in sales, promotions or customer discounts. The formula is simple: multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to find out how much you save.

The discount formula

Discount = Price × % ÷ 100

The final price is the original price minus the discount. For example, a €60 item with a 25% discount has a €15 discount and ends up at €45.

Tips

  • Check whether the discount is applied before or after tax.
  • Compare final prices, not percentages: a 70% off an inflated price may not be the best deal.
  • Some stores apply extra discounts when using promo codes.

Discounts applied in a chain

Some offers apply several discounts consecutively, for example a 20% sale and then an extra 10%. They are not additive: after 20% you are left with 80%, and the extra 10% is calculated on that 80%, not on the original price. The final result is less than a direct 30%.

How to compare two offers

To know which is the better deal, always calculate the real final price. A "second item at half price" can be worse than a direct 40% depending on how many items you buy. Use this calculator to turn each promotion into its final price and compare.
