How to calculate VAT

VAT (Value Added Tax) is an indirect tax applied to consumption. In Spain there are several rates: the standard 21%, the reduced 10% and the super-reduced 4%.

Adding VAT to an amount

To add VAT to a taxable base, multiply the amount by the rate and add it. For example, a €100 product at 21% VAT has €21 of tax and a total of €121.

Removing VAT from a total

If you have an amount that already includes VAT and you want to know the base, divide the total by 1 plus the rate. For example, €121 including 21% VAT corresponds to a €100 base.

VAT rates in Spain

The standard 21% rate applies to most products and services. The reduced 10% rate affects food, transport and hospitality, among others. The super-reduced 4% rate is used for basic goods such as bread, milk, eggs or medicines. Note that these rates can vary by country.

Common questions about VAT

  • Price with VAT included: it already comes marked as "VAT included" and nothing else needs to be added.
  • Invoicing for a business: in many cases, business-to-business invoices must split the base and VAT separately, and special rates or exemptions may apply.
  • VAT on services: some services, such as education or healthcare, may be VAT-exempt in certain countries.
